'On the Spot' Essay Writing Competition-2009 for Post Graduate Students of Statistics The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation will organize an 'On the Spot' essay competition for Post Graduate Students of Statistics studying in recognized Universities / Colleges. The winners will be awarded prize & at a function to be organized on the occasion of Statistics Day, the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis falling on 29th June 2009.

Two topics of essay would be given be on the spot and the essay should be written on one of the topics. The Essay should be written in about 5000 words in three hours time. While evaluating the essay, appropriate weightage will be given to contents, writing skills, originality of ideas and sequence of presentation.

Each eligible participant will be asked through a separate communication to come to the nearest Regional Office of National Sample Survey Organization for writing the essay. No TA/DA will be paid for appearing in the competition. The list of the Regional Offices may be seen in the Ministry's website http://www.mospi.gov.in/ (National Sample Survey Organisation/Field Operations/ FOD Offices). Nearest Regional Office may be mentioned in the application.

The willing participants should submit their application (in duplicate) in the prescribed format (The application format can be downloaded from the Ministry's website http://www.mospi.gov.in/: Central Statistical Organization/ Social Statistics Division/Research Schemes/ Essay Writing Competition) through the Head of the Department of the University/Institution to the Additional Director General, (Social Statistics Division), Central Statistical Organization, Ministry of Statistics & PI, West Block-8, Wing 6, R.K. Puram, New Delhi-110066.

The Competition will be held on 22nd February, 2009 at 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM and the last date for receiving the applications is 30th January, 2009.

The essay will be evaluated by a Committee consitituted by MOS&PI on the basis of Contents, Originality of Ideas, Sequence of Presentation and Writing Skills. A full list of winners will also be published on Ministry' Website http:/www.mospi.gov.in. The individual will be notified in writing.

The essays selected at national level would be given prizes as under :

First prize Rs. 15,000
Second prize (2 numbers) Rs. 12,000 -each
Third prize (3 numbers) @Rs.10,000-each
Consolation prizes (5 numbers) @ Rs.5,000/-each

The winners of the competition will be invited to a function to be organized in New Delhi. The winners coming to the place of function will be entitled to receive actual fares for their to and fro journey to the place of function through shortest route by rail in sleeper class. The Ministry will also arrange for the stay of the prize winners at the place of the function.
