Delhi University Semester System - Your Feedback

Delhi University Semester System

From: Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi

To: Principals, Faculty and Students of the University of Delhi

I (Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi ) am writing this open letter to all the stakeholders in our University about the issue of introducing Semester System in our undergraduate programmes. We had a special meeting of the Academic Council of the University on 7th October, 08 and the matter was discussed at length. While there was an overwhelming empathy for introduction of the semester system, there was a feeling that extended consultations are required as there could be difficulties in implementation and these difficulties need to be identified and taken into consideration.

To begin with - the following arguments were advanced for the implementation of a semester system at the undergraduate level from the academic session 2010:

* Semester system and Credit system are in conformity with global practices and standards and will facilitate student exchange and better appreciation of our degrees.
* Semester system and Credit system will allow movement across universities within India and outside India.
* Semester system will allow more inter-disciplinarity.
* Students will work throughout the year rather than through periods of leisure and hyper activity.
* Regular exams would lead to continuous evaluation.
* Semester system has been successfully operating in India in many premier institutes like the IITs and many universities like JNU and the University of Hyderabad. Some of the courses at the University of Delhi are being taught in a semester mode.
* Semester system is going to be implemented uniformly at the postgraduate level in the University of Delhi from 2009 and needs to be implemented at all the levels and in all the courses for uniformity.

It may be added that we already have mid-term examinations in all the undergraduate courses - semester system will lead to replacement of these exams with end-semester examinations.

Please feel free to speak to your Principals, Head of the Departments at the University, fellow teachers in the Staff Councils and Elected Representatives to articulate your thoughts, concerns and advice pertaining to this matter.
