Second Summit of the Science Academies of South Asia

Background (First Summit) The Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi organized the First  Summit of the South Asian Academies of Sciences during 6-9 September 2012 at its premises. Presidents and top representatives of 9 Academies namely, Afghanistan Academy of Sciences; African Academy of Sciences, Nairobi (a pan African organization representing 32 African countries); Bangladesh Academy of Sciences; Indian National Science Academy; The Academy of Sciences of Islamic Republic of Iran; Mauritius Academy of Science & Technology; Nepal Academy of Science & Technology; Pakistan Academy of Sciences and The National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka participated in the deliberations. A declaration, “Delhi Declaration”, was released at the end of the Summit after detailed discussions and deliberation focused on major societal issues: Energy Options; Health care and Infectious Diseases; Science Education; Science and Society; Women in Science; Urbanization; Climate Change and Inclusive innovation. Creating a Network of the South Asian Academies of Science and to organize the Summit annually was resolved in the final Session of the Summit.

Proposed Second Summit:

Following the resolution of the First Summit, the Second Summit of Science Academies of South Asia is scheduled to be held during 24-27 September 2013 at INSA, New Delhi. On the day one, i.e. 24th September 2013, a Workshop on “Women in Science Education and Research" will be organized jointly with the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA). The Science Academies of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been invited. In addition, Science Academies from Africa, Korea, Malaysia, Mauritius and Turkey have also been invited as especial delegates to participate in the Workshop and Summit.

The following issues will be discussed :

ICT Tools in Enhancing Quality of Higher Education;
Agricultural Productivity, Food and Nutrition;
Sustainable Development: Post 2015 Scenario; and
Role of S&T and Innovation.

It is expected that a high level delegations led by Presidents of the participating Academies will actively participate in the deliberation of the Second Summit.
