The Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan

The story of Srinivasa Ramanujan is both inspiring and relevant in the present context. December 22, 2012 marks the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the brilliant mathematician born into a modest and conservative family in Kumbakonam, a relatively small town in Tamilnadu who overcame several hurdles to find a place among the celebrated intellectuals of Cambridge. A person who had amazing leaps of the imagination that also directed his mathematical abilities, Ramanujan played with mathematics as though with foundational counters in human existence. While he had his friends and mentors, it was an unfinished life. Ramanujan passed away at the young age of 32 of tuberculosis, but he left behind formulations in mathematics that have paved the path for many scholars who came after him.

The international conference “The Legacy of Srinivas Ramanujan” organized by the University of Delhi to be held in Delhi from 17th to 22nd December 2012 is a tribute to his genius and an opportunity to chart the journey he made possible. The year 2012 was declared as the “National Mathematics Year(NMY)” by Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India. The conference in Delhi ends a year of celebrations and will be inaugurated by the Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Kapil Sibal, who is also chair of the National Committee. The Organizing Committee for NMY has Professor M.S. Raghunathan, President of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society in the chair, and Professor Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, as member-secretary. A galaxy of renowned mathematicians from around the world has been invited to deliver talks.

The conference venue is the stunning historical building, the Viceregal Lodge from where the imperial (Colonial)government once managed its affairs. Today it is the Vice Chancellor’s office in India’s premier university.
