VIT becomes the first Indian University to get the ABET (USA) accreditation
VIT University becomes the first university in India to undergo the coveted ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation process successfully. In the first phase, two of its programs viz., B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and B.Tech in Civil Engineering are accredited with the highest possible grade of NGR (Next General Review). The accreditation is awarded retroactively from 1st October 2007. It is valid for six years till 30th September 2015. VIT is planning to apply for ABET accreditation for the other degree programs in subsequent phases.

ABET stands for Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, is a federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing these fields. Among the most respected accreditation organizations in the U.S., ABET has provided leadership and quality assurance in higher education for over 75 years.
ABET currently accredits some 2,800 programs at more than 600 colleges and universities nationwide. Over 1,500 dedicated volunteers participate annually in ABET activities.
ABET also provides leadership internationally through workshops, consultancies, memoranda of understanding, and mutual recognition agreements, such as the Washington Accord.
ABET is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
