Admission Notice 2009-10

Applications are invited for admission to the following M. Tech. 1ST year Programmes in the Department of Applied Physics, Calcutta University for the academic session 2009-10.

A. Full time 2-year 4-semester M. Tech. Courses in

(i) Electrical Engineering
(ii) Instrumentation and Control Engineering

B. Part-time self-financed 3-year 6-semester M. Tech. (Evening) courses in

(i) Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power)
(ii) Instrumentation and Control Engineering

Eligibility: A candidate having B. E. /B. Tech. Degree in respective subjects or its equivalent from any university / AICTE recognized institute is eligible to apply for admission in the said courses. GATE qualified candidates will be given preference. Final year B.Tech/B.E students are also entitled to submit the application form but admission will only be made subject to production of mark sheet, if selected.

For sponsored candidates certificate of sponsorship from the employer should accompany the application. For part time 6-semester evening courses, candidates already in service will be given preference. Certificate of employment should accompany the application of such candidates.

Applications form will be available from the Calcutta University sales counter (87/1, College Street, Kolkata 700 073) on all working days between 11A.M. to 3 P.M. on payment of Rupees 200/- (for General Candidates) and Rupees 100/- (for SC/ST/PH Candidates). Application forms may also be downloaded from our website: Downloaded form must accompany a demand draft of Rs.200/ [for general candidates] or Rs.100/- [for SC/ST/PH candidates] drawn in favour of “Calcutta University”, payable at Kolkata or by Cash payable at University Cash Counter either 87/1, College Street, Kolkata- 700073 or Science College, 92, A.P.C.Road, Kolkata- 700 009 at the time of submission of filled in application form. Detailed information is available in the university website and in the Notice Board of the Secretary Office. Application forms, duly filled in, should reach to the Office of the Secretary, UCSTA, C.U., 92, A.P.C.Road, Kolkata- 700009 on or before May 4, 2009.

Admission process for Non C.U candidates includes a written test of about one hour duration, in the general area of respective subjects followed by interview. Questions for the test will be of short answer / MCQ type.

MPhil/PhD Programme in Theoretical Physics

The MPhil course started at our new University is intended to fulfil this important need of (i) providing research orientation to the students and (ii) giving them an opportunity for in-depth study in the various research areas.

The MPhil course in Theoretical Physics is a three-semester course. The first two semesters consist of course work while the third semester would be spent on doing individual projects. Among the courses offered are Advanced Mathematical Physics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Advanced Statistical Mechanics, Computer Programming and Numerical Methods in Physics, and some Electives like Elementary Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic & Moleculer Physics and Nuclear Physics

Eligibility to apply :

Male students with MSc degree in Physics from any recognized University/Institute with 55% marks will be eligible to apply.

15 May: Last date for receiving applications for admission to MPhil course

1 June: Written admission test (10 am to 1 pm)

Date and time of interview to be announced at the time of the written test

1 July: Classes begin

How to apply:

Application forms are available in the university website or can be collected in person from the University's central office at Belur (just outside the Belur Math main gate), from 1 March, during office hours. Information in this regard may be obtained over phone no. 26549999.
Submission of Application Forms

Application forms, along with necessary certificates, can be submitted either by post or in person during office hours at the university office, together with a fee of Rs.200/- by cash or demand draft in favour of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Belur Math. An attested passport size photograph should be affixed in the application form. The applications should reach the university office by 15 May .

The admit card with the attested photograph must be retained by the candidate for the entrance examination and brought to the examination hall.

Admission To MBA 2009 Based on CAT 2008

Applications are invited for admission to the full-time MBA Programme 2009 – 2011 at Mesra, and our Extension Centres at Lalpur, Noida and Jaipur. Please see below for details and addresses of Centres.


1. Candidates must have appeared in CAT 2008.

2. They must hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 10+2+3) or equivalent in any discipline recognized by the UGC / Ministry of HRD / AIU.

Candidates of B.Sc. / B.A. / B. Com. Honours must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in their Honours subject. Candidates of BBA and other graduate courses must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Candidates graduating in 2009 can also apply, provided they can submit marksheets by 31 October 2009. Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

4. Candidates must have Verbal Percentile Score at least 40 (25 for SC/ST) and Total Percentile Score at least 40 (25 for SC/ST) in CAT-2008.

How to Apply: The MBA 2009 Application Material including the Information Brochure 2009 can be obtained from all our Centres at the addresses given below (a) In person from 2 March 2009 to 21 April 2009 on payment of Rs. 1,200/- and (b) By post on payment of Rs. 1,250/- (All payments by crossed DD in favour of Birla Institute of Technology, payable at Ranchi). Postal requests must be received by 15 April 2009, and must include covering letter & two slips of paper (10x10 cm) with name, address in capitals and phone number.

To apply for the programme, eligible candidates must EITHER

1. Complete the online application form on our website, and send a printout of the completed form with 2 recent colour photographs (one pasted on the form and one attached by clip to the form), along with photocopies of all certificates, and a crossed Demand Draft for Rs. 1,200/- in favour of Birla Institute of Technology, payable at Ranchi, to the office of Dean Admissions, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi – 835215 positively by the due date,


2. Complete the printed application form provided with the MBA 2009 Application Material, and send the duly completed form with 2 recent colour photographs (one pasted on the form and one attached by clip to the form), along with photocopies of all certificates, to the above address by the due date.
