Introduction

Medical Textiles, a highly specialized stream of Technical Textiles, envisage application of Textile structures for medical and biological applications. Tissue Engineering attempts to regenerate functional tissues using cells with precisely designed textile polymeric scaffolds to restore or replace lost morphology and functions of diseased or damaged organs. To find novel engineering solutions to the existing challenging clinical problems, it is critically required to have multidisciplinary approach of problem solving, and attitude of ‘breaking down the silos’. This QIP short-term course will focus on advances in Medical Textiles & Tissue Engineering.

The objective of the course is to familiarize the participants with various Medical Textile products commercially available in healthcare field, their limitations, general understanding of cellpolymer interaction, and about challenging Tissue engineering applications. They will learn how to apply Textile technology and Tissue engineering principles to the solution of existing medical problems, and the methods for the fabrication of novel bio - engineered products. By attending the course they will come to appreciate the real-world challenges encountered in translational clinical research.

This QIP course will provide unique opportunity for participants to spend their valuable time with the experts in the area- both from academics and Industry. It is expected that the planned interactive sessions will enable participants to (a) identify existing specific clinical problems, (b) have opportunity of learning details of certain aspects of Medical textiles & Tissue Engineering and be able to place them in the broader context of overall strategic approach used to solve a clinical problem, (c) improve the quality of Medical textile-related tutorials they use in their colleges.

Course contents
» Polymers & Textile-based techniques used for medical application
» Cell-Polymer-Fibre interaction
» Non-implantable materials (Wounddressing, Bandages, Gauges)
» Implantable biomedical devices (Vascular grafts, Sutures, Heart valves)
» Extra-corporeal materials (Fibrous scaffolds for Tissue Engineering of Cartilage, Liver, Blood Vessel, Urinary bladder, Ligaments etc)
» Healthcare and hygiene products (Surgical Gowns, masks, Super absorbent polymers, Antimicrobial clothing & specific finishes for Medical Textile products)
» Safety issues, legal and ethical issues involved in the medical textile materials.

The participation to this QIP course is open to full time regular/permanent teachers of AICTE recognized degree level Textile Technology or Biotechnology colleges, technical universities, deemed universities. The candidates are required to attach a demand draft (refundable) of Rs. 100/- in favour of “Registrar, IIT Delhi” along with the application form & it should be sent to course coordinator at the earliest but not later than 1st October 2008. This demand draft will not be refunded in case a selected participant does not attend the programme.

The selected candidates will be paid return second-class rail fare by the shortest route as per the rules. The participants have to make their own arrangements for stay. However the organizers will try to book accommodation on payment basis within the guesthouse of IIT Delhi, if requested sufficiently in advance through the Registration Form and depending on availability.
