Australian National Chemistry Quiz, ANCQ-2012

The Department of Chemistry is coordinating International Australian National Chemistry Quiz, conducted internationally by The Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Australia on Thursday, 6th September, 2012. The quiz is an international event, in which many prominent countries like Australia, Germany, China, Canada Fiji, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brunei, England, Vietnam, India and many others participate.

The Quiz will be held at two junior levels, one for Class 7 and 8, and the other for Class 9 and 10, and at two senior levels, Class11 and Class12. The Quiz will require a time slot of 70 minutes and the question paper will consist of 30 multiple choice questions. Answer will be recorded on a computer mark sense sheet. The students appearing in quiz will be required to bring a lead pencil (2B) only and a calculator, if sitting for the Senior Quiz. The interesting schools may register their students at Department of Chemistry, University of Kashmir, before 10th of August (Friday), 2012. The registration fee for each participating student is Rs.100 and a help book of Rs.50.

A candidate who has passed the Post-graduate Examination in any discipline of Mahatma Gandhi University or of other Universities recognized as equivalent thereto securing not less than 55% marks in the aggregate shall be eligible to apply for registration for Ph.D. For SC/ST candidates, the minimum marks required for application is 50% in the aggregate in the Post-graduate Examination. Provided, however, that MBBS, BAMS, BHMS and BDS degree holders who have secured not less than 50% marks for their final examinations shall be eligible for registration for Ph.D Provided further that CA qualified candidates, that is, a person whose name has been entered as a member in the Register maintained either by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India or by the Institute of Cost and Work Accountants of India shall also be eligible to apply for registration for Ph.D. When the application is made for registration at an approved Research Centre other than the University Departments, the application shall be accompanied by letters of consent from the Head of the Research Centre (The College Principal in the case of an affiliated college centre) where the applicant proposes to work as well as from the Supervising Teacher under whom he/she proposes to work.

Until the Senate of IIT Kanpur meets and decides to change its decision the earlier decision stands. There is no new information on the exact nature of JEE 2013 apart from what has been reported in the press and available in the form of unofficial minutes (see item below). Formal minutes of the IIT Council meeting are awaited. The Senate is likely to meet only after the formal decision of the IIT Council is known. We hope this will happen in the next couple of weeks.

This HT article (2nd Jul) clearly brings out that normalization is not scientifically supported. One of the authors of the report says "We were then told very clearly that we were not to worry about whether scores could be compared, but to only provide the best way to compare them". What more is there to say?

It is a temporary research position which may be offered for those who seek to choose research as a profession. The research work during the postdoctoral period can be in areas that are of interest, both to the postdoctoral fellows and the Institute.(Institute henceforth refers to IIT Madras) The presence of the postdoctoral fellows at the Institute will further enhance the research culture and output of the Institute and help promote interdisciplinary research. It is a transition phase which can also help a fresh doctorate transform into an independent researcher before taking up a research career.

Duration: The duration of the fellowship will be initially for a period of 2 years, extendable for a further period of one more year based on the progress of the Post Doctoral fellow and the recommendation of the Department.
