About SET


The University Grants Commission (U.G.C.), while prescribing the revised pay scale for teachers in colleges and in universities, in accordance with the Fourth Pay Commission, has prescribed that the person being appointed as lecturer shall qualify for the new scales provided he/she clears, the Eligibility Test, to be conducted by the U.G.C., in addition to the minimum qualifications already prescribed. The U.G.C., accordingly conducts, the National Educational Tests (N.E.T.), for many subjects. The U.G.C. and the C.S.I.R.(Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) conduct combined tests for science subjects. The NET or the combined Tests enables the candidate to receive the Junior Research Fellowship (J.R.F.) of the U.G.C./C.S.I.R. and/or makes him/her eligible for being appointed as lecturer. In view of the fact that the number of candidates who are required to be qualified for being appointed as lecturers, under the new pay scales, is fairly large, the U.G.C. has authorised the State Governments or the State Agencies on behalf of the State Governments to conduct the State Eligibility Test(SET) for lectureship, provided, the SET is duly accredited by the U.G.C.

Eligibility Criteria : The applicant must be a citizen of India and should have passed the H.S.(10+2) or its equivalent examination. The general candidates must have to secure at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology taken together (40% for SC/ST candidates) and at least 30% marks in English (for all categories). In addition, candidates must secure at least pass marks in the subjects individually including vernacular (or any other fifth subject) as mentioned below:

Applications are invited from post-graduate candidates who have obtained M Sc in any discipline of the sciences/ MBBS/ M Pharma/ M Tech/ MVSc, to work under the mentorship of its faculty as Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) leading to a PhD degree. Candidates should have intense interest to work at the interface of multiple disciplines in the areas related (but not limited) to structural, systems, and chemical biology, biomaterials and nano science & technology, cellular and molecular biology, and disease biology and drug discovery. The fellowship is initially tenable for the duration of two years, and is extendable for three additional years for Senior Research Fellowship after a review. The candidates who have completed their M Sc within past two years and have scored 60% or more marks in their graduate and post-graduate degree examinations are eligible to apply.

The Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) is a newly established institution of education, training & research in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the auspices of UNESCO. RCB is designed to be a centre of excellence in biotechnology with intimate contributions from the countries of the region and academic institutions from the rest of the world. It provides a meeting place where innovation, enterprise, and industrial development will germinate.

The Centre invites young scientists having Ph D degree in any discipline of science and who are below the age of 35 years to work in the areas related (but not limited) to structural, systems, and chemical biology, biomaterials and nano science & technology, cellular and molecular biology, disease biology and drug discovery. Those likely to complete their Ph D degree in the next 3 months are also eligible to apply.

The award shall be initially for the duration of three years, which may be extended for two more years subject to satisfactory progress, based on a review by a committee of experts. The award carries a consolidated stipend of Rs. 40,000/-per month. The awardee shall not be entitled to draw any other fellowship or salary.

Intro The Ninth All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was held on 25th April, 2010. 1065100 candidates appeared, out of 1118148 candidates registered, for the examination at 1623 centres located in 86 cities. Approximately, 26816 seats for BE/B.Tech & 936 seats for B.Arch/B.Planning in various institutions, namely National Institutes of Technology, IIITs, Deemed Universities, Technical Institutions, Delhi Technological University, Delhi and other Govt. funded Institutions were offered through this examination A centralized online counselling had been organized for filling up the All India seats by the Central Counselling Board.

Final list of Institutions admitting students (with intake in each discipline and category as per reservation) through AIEEE-2011 for Counselling shall be available on the CCB website (www.ccb.nic.in) in the month of May/June 2011

The Application Form duly filled in should be sent to THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY(AIEEE), CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION, PS 1-2 INSTITUTIONAL AREA, IP EXTENSION, PATPARGANJ, DELHI-110092 in the printed envelope supplied by the Board so as to reach positively by 20.01.2011. The Application Form will not be received personally in any case. The candidate must retain photocopy of his/her filled in Application Form for future correspondence, if required.

Important Note: The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at All India Engineering / Architecture Entrance Examination shall be limited to 03 (three) uniformly for all the candidates in consecutive years. The candidates passed +2 exam in 2009, 2010 or appearing in +2 in 2011 are only eligible to appear in AIEEE-2011. Candidates passed +2 in 2008 or before or appearing in 2012 are not eligible to appear in AIEEE-2011.

This 3-week course will be given in two rounds. The gap between the two rounds is expected to enable the participants to undertake a small research project on any of the themes discussed in the first round. Both rounds will consist of workshops during which the participants will reflect on issues derived from a core reading or presentation. Discussion and activities on each of the themes listed below will be initiated by a resource person or a panel of resource persons who will be expected to spend one full working day with the participants, dividing the day in three sessions, the first one to deliver an introductory talk, the second one to enable the participants to read and reflect on the material provided for the theme, and the third session to interact with the resource person(s) over the issues arising out of the material or its implications for education and teacher training. This structure can be modified in order to suit the convenience and priorities of the resource person.

IGNOU launches Diploma in Watershed Management


Keeping in mind the need to develop human resource in watershed development and management, IGNOU has launched a one-year Diploma Programme in Watershed Management. The programme will commence from January 1, 2011.

The objectives of the programme are to introduce the principals of the watershed management approach and the value of working in watershed; mobilisation and capacity building of rural youth, landless and women; and to develop skills for small scale irrigation and water supply structures for soil and water conservation strategies.

Eligibility
for the programme is 10+2 or Bachelors Preparatory Programme from IGNOU. There is no restriction on age. The fee for the programme is Rs 9,000 for General candidates and Rs 4,500 for candidates from rural areas or urban BPL (Below Poverty Line) candidates.

The medium of instruction for the programme is Hindi and English. Regional languages will be added at a later stage.

A week long Specialized Training Workshop on“Quantitative Data Analysis in Social Science Research” will be held from December 13-18,2010 at the ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Professor Bhupinder Brar, Honorary Director, said that the Regional Centre is holding this specialized training workshop for those participants who have already attended one of our previous basic workshops on quantitative research methods. It focuses more sharply on the analysis of quantitative data. The course revolves around the use of numbers in social science research and introduces techniques of using numbers to describe, understand and analyze the social world.

Shri P.K. Saini, Deputy Director, said that the Regional Centre has been conducting such training workshops every year. The positive feedback received from the participants over the past several years has encouraged us to conduct the workshop this year second time. The participants will be young teachers and research scholars working in University Departments, Research Institutions and affiliated Colleges located in the state of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The name of the college was later changed to Maclagan Engineering College and its started functioning under the name on March 19, 1924. In the year 1931, the college got affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. After partition in 1947, the college was shifted to Roorkee (India) and was renamed as East Punjab College of Engineering. In the year 1950 the word East was dropped and it came to know by its present name - Punjab Engineering College. Towards the end of December 1953, the college shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh to function under Govt. of Punjab. In 1966, with the formation of Union Territory of Chandigarh, the college same under control of Govt. of India through Chandigarh Administration. In October 2003, the Govt. of India notified the Punjab Engineering College as a Deemed to be University and thereafter it became known as Punjab Engineering College ( Deemed University). In 2009, the Board of Governors renamed the institution as PEC University of Technology. In 1994 this institution was adjudged the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers. It occupies an area of 146 acres.

Quantum Information Processing and Applications

An International School and Conference on Quantum Information Processing and Applications (QIPA-2011) will be held during 14 -20 February, 2011 at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad, India. The school will be from 14-16 February and conference will be held from 18-20 February, with a one-day break on 17 February.

In this program, in addition to fundamental issues related to quantum information, the focus will be on topics at the interface of quantum information with other sciences like condensed matter, cold gas, quantum optics, and quantum chaos.

The meeting will focus on understanding the generation and detection of primordial (both inflationary as well as non/post-inflationary) features and non-Gaussianities. While the first four days (December 14-17, 2010) of the meeting will be dedicated to these topics, the fifth day (i.e. December 18, 2010) will focus on issues in string cosmology.

The ‘Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award’ (IYBA) was instituted by the Department of Biotechnology in the year 2005, as an attractive, career-oriented scheme to identify and nurture outstanding young scientists with innovative ideas and desire to pursue research in frontier areas of biotechnology. For the year 2010 awards the department invites applications from the young investigators upto the age of 35 years.

The award will consist of financial support for a project and Cash Award/fellowship for the awardees. Awardees having a regular employment will receive a cash award of ` 1.00/- Lakh every year during the course of the project in addition to grants-in-aid of ` 50.00/- Lakhs for a project. The awardees, those are not in the regular employment will receive a fellowship of ` 40,000/- per month and shall be attached to a Senior Scientist (Mentor) in a University, Research Institute, Medical/Agriculture/ Veterinary College or any other institute of repute. It is expected that the awardees will work independently and the Mentor will facilitate the awardees research efforts. IIIT-Delhi, a young and fast upcoming research-led Institute of Excellence created by Govt of Delhi, has a team running in the Airtel Half Marathon. The team, besides some young faculty members and students, includes its Director as well. This run is to highlight and seek support for the main goal of the Institute - Research and Innovation.

There are over 2500 engineering colleges in India, with 100+ in NCR alone, but only a handful have ability to conduct serious research and guide PhD students of international quality. Tomorrow's India will need much more research and innovation, and many, many more PhDs. IIIT-Delhi aims to contribute to this effort by focusing on research and innovation, and on PhD program (besides top-quality UG education).

One of the biggest challenges facing all research-led Institutes is to encourage bright students to join the PhD program. The UGC-NET Coaching Centre at Maulana Azad National Urdu University will arrange the coaching class for the NET exam scheduled to be held on 26th December 2010. The same can also be downloaded from the University website www.manuu.ac.in

An entrance test for enrolment to coaching will be conducted on 12th November 2010 at the University campus at 11a.m. and result declared on 15th November 2010. Eligible candidates will have to pay a fee of Rs.100/- at the time of enrolment through DD in favour of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, payable at Hyderabad. Classes commence from 18th November 2010 till 23rd December 2010.
