Selection of Trainee Navigating Officer Cadets (TNOCs) - February 2009

The All India Common Entrance Examination (OPENNET) is likely to be conducted by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on 30th November 2008 for admission to the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) Course leading to B.Sc (Nautical Science) in collaboration of Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). Exact dates shall be indicated in the advertisement issued by IGNOU. The shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI), proposes to select around 80 TNOCs for February 2009 batch from amongst the candidates qualified in the IGNOU OPENNET Examination and eligible for the Pre Sea Training Courses at Maritime Training Institute, Mumbai, [ID Code: 1640 P] for the February 2009 batch.

The DNS Course February 2009 Prospectus and Application Form shall be available from the various regional IGNOU offices and also their website www.ignou.ac.in

Details regrading Eligibility Criteria, Age limit, Medical Standards, Training fees, Career prospectus, procedure to opt for Pre-Sea and shipped Training with SCI are available in the Employment Newspaper dated 25 October, 2008 and on their website www.shipindia.com under the heading "Current Vacancies".

Original IGNOU Application Forms completely filled in must be sent directly to IGNOU by the applicants. Please don not send the Original IGNOU Application form to SCI as the same will be rejected.

Last date for Receipt of Application by IGNOU: 07th November 2008

Date of Common Entrance Examination (OPENNET) by IGNOU: 30th November 2008

Candidates interested in opting for Pre Sea and Shipboard training with SCI are advised to send SCI a photocopy of their application form sent to IGNOU, SCI shall select candidates from amongst those eligible and successful in the IGNOU OPENNET and in the interviews conducted by a panel at SCI officers.

Applicants desirous of training with SCI shall report at their Head Office at 10.00 an on tentative dates INDICATED below for selection Interviews with copy of OPENNET examination and all other documents.

Tentative Date of Interview by SCI: 29th, 30th, 31st December 2008 and 1st January 2009.

Cell and developmental Biology are dynamic disciplines that drive research in many exciting areas of modern biology: for instance, fundamental mechanisms of growth and development, Stem Cell Biology, understanding disease mechanism and therapy. In this course researchers from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and Temasek Life Science (TLL), Singapore plan to take the participant on a tour of the exciting world of cell and developmental biology and discuss the emerging areas of research and development.

The teaching format would include popular talks on emerging areas of cell and developmental biology, talks on techniques used in these areas of research, interactive sessions with the participants, films and video shows, and, finally, lab tours.

Who can apply:

The course is open to 50 Indian Students who are in their final year/semester of either B.Tech or M.Sc. program in any branch of Life Science. The applicants would be selected based on their academic record and interest shown in Cell and Developmental Biology.

The series of Winter School in Speech and Audio Processing provides a regular forum for research students, faculty and R&D engineers working in these areas to enhance their background and simplify the intricate research aspects involved in these areas. The schools work on a non profit basis and hope toprovide a platform for a qualitative exchange of ideas for utilizing speech technology in Indian Context.WiSSAP-09 is the fourth one in the series, following very successful WiSSAP 06, WiSSAP 07 and WiSSAP 08. The focus of WiSSAP 09 is on Speaker and Language Recognition.

IIT Rajasthan

Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan

IIT Rajasthan is one among the new set of IITs announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The location of the IIT in Rajasthan will be announced by the Govt. of India after completion of the formalities of land acquisition for setting up the new IIT in Rajasthan. However, in the meantime, IIT Kanpur has been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan.

The academic session in IIT Rajasthan will commence from August 2008. To start with, a 4-year B.Tech. programme will be offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses and the fee structure and other rules will be broadly same as in the mentor IIT i.e IIT Kanpur. The first year classes are proposed to be held at the IIT Kanpur campus and the students admitted will be relocated to the place in Rajasthan where the new IIT will be established. The students and the parents taking admission in the new IIT Rajasthan will be required to give an undertaking to this effect.
