PU as one of the productive Universities in the area of Science and Technology

The National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies under the aegis of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi has released a status report of Indian Science and Technology for the period 1996-2006 identifying and defining the interface between Science, Technology and Society. The study, based on Scopus International database identifies knowledge generating Institutions, National Laboratories, Indian Universities, Indian Scientists, Innovations, National competitiveness in the global context. The study compares top 20 productive countries including USA, UK, Australia, Canada, China and many other developed and developing countries contributing to global knowledge base of Science and Technology. The study has identified top 21 Scientists from India and 35 Indian Institutions and Universities who have made contributions to the Science and Technology growth of India during the period 1996-2006.

Professor S.K Kulkarni,
Professor of Pharmacology, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University has been identified among the top 21 scientists (he is listed at top 10) as the most productive scientist during this period. Amongst others, the list includes scientists like Dr. C.N.R. Rao, Dr. G.R. Desiraju, Dr. J.S. Yadav and Dr. G. Mehta. Panjab University has also been listed as one of the productive Universities in the area of Science and Technology.

Prof. S.K. Kulkarni, Professor of Pharmacology, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and D.U.I., Panjab University has more than three decades of teaching and research experience. Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences and Indian Pharmaceutical Association, he is recipient of several national honours for his contributions to Pharmacology research and pharmaceutical education which include the U.G.C.-Hari Om Ashram Trust National Award in Neuroscience and Ranbaxy Research Foundation Award, besides others. A Fulbright Visiting Scholar of US-Education Foundation, Dr. Kulkarni was the General President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Congress Association. He serves on many committees of the National Statutory bodies such as UGC, NAAC, AICTE and CSIR systems.

He was recently conferred the prestigious Punjab Ratan title for his contributions to education and research and the Cipla Distinguished Fellowship Award.

Applications are invited for admission to the newly started self-financed courses B.Sc (Hons. School) and M.Sc (Hons. School) in Physics and Electronics w.e.f. the academic session 2008-2009.

(1) B.Sc (Hons. School) in Physics and Electronics (Seats : 20 +3 NRI)

The merit list will be prepared on the basis of aggregate marks obtained in the 10+2 examination (science stream with physics) to which marks obtained in Physics will again be added. The CET marks will not be considered for this course.

The completed application forms for admission to B.Sc (HS) must reach the Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh by 21st July, 2008, 5 PM irrespective of the date of declaration of result of the qualifying examination.

Interview date for B.Sc (HS) will be intimated later through the Panjab University website only which the candidates are advised to visit. At the time of interview, the candidates must bring the testimonials in original for reservations/weightages to be claimed by them.

Fellowship: Full time candidates shall be considered for Research Fellowship, subject to availability, as per institute rules. PROJECT DESIGNED ON WATER LEVEL INDICATOR


A 10-day Summer Training organized for the benefit of MCA IV Semester students and Computer faculty at Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana started on 9 June 2008 concluded today.

The main topics covered in this training were general awareness, working and behaviour of daily use Electronic equipment such as PCP Designing, DVR, CCTV Independent Motion Detection Device, Wireless and Home Security Device and their interface with Computers.

Mr. Bhupinder Singh, Secretary Punjab Electronic Industry Association (PEIA) was the resource person, who is engaged in dealing with the Electronic Equipment for the last 15 years. In this training workshop, students designed Water Level Indicator, which indicates that how much water is there into the water tank. It indicates periodically the levels at 25%, 50%, 75% and when Water level reaches at 100%, it generates a bell that Water Tank is full. The same message can be sent through landline telephones, Mobile Phones that your Water Tank is full through a CDMA device, the cost of which is just Rs. 100/-. The main purpose is to prevent the water wastages of the Houses.

The students of MCA-IV collected the data from the houses located at Dugri Phase I to Phase III, Housing Board colonies, BRS Nagar, LIG flats, MIG Flats, HIG Flats, Model Town, Focal point Phase-I and II and Sector 32, 38 and 39, which comprised about one lac residential houses. The main feature of this training was that under the expert guidance of Mr. Bhupinder Singh and his Associate Ms. Rajni, a team of twelve students of MCA IV Semester of GNIMT has designed a unique Project on Water Level Indicator for use in the residential houses to prevent wastage of water. They were divided into 6 teams of two students each.

The students who participated in the Workshop are Manjit Singh, Gurpreet Kaur, Jasvinder Singh, Harsimran Kaur, Harleen Kaur, Jasleen Kaur, Sukhmani Duggal, Sheenu Garg, Harjotika Kaur, Saurabh Jain, Remonica Sharma and Tarun Gupta.

were the Coordinators of this Summer Training.

Eligibility:

A student to be eligible for admission to Diploma in Foreign Trade Practices and Procedures must have passed a Bachelor’s Degree examination or its equivalent in any discipline from an accredited University in India or abroad (applicants appearing in Graduate Exam in 2004 can apply but must submit proof of passing the exam. before admission).

Schemes of Admission Admission:

Scheme I:
Candidates under this Scheme will be admitted on the basis of an All India Test which will be objective type in nature. The short listed candidates will be assessed through group discussion and interview to judge their merit, communication skills and suitability for the course.

Scheme II:
Candidates to be considered under this Scheme must be Nominated, Sponsored by registered public or private organizations where they are employed. Such students will be exempt from appearing in the Written Test. They would be admitted on the basis of relative merit to be determined by group discussion and interview.

Scheme III:
Under this Scheme, NRIs/NRI sponsored or Foreign students who are able to produce relevant documents as proof of their NRI status or their sponsors or their foreign nationality will be considered. Such applicants will be exempted from the Written Test and will be admitted on the basis of relative merit and other relevant qualifications as determined by group-discussion and interview. In order to be considered, they must attach a certificate from their parents/sponsors that they will meet all the dues. This certificate should ordinarily be submitted with the application.

The Total number of seats is 30 out of which 20 are under Scheme I, 5 , are under Scheme II, and 5 are under Scheme III.

How to Apply:

The application forms for all schemes must be accompanied by two extra photographs, photocopies of marksheets from class X onwards and Reservation Certificate, Sponsorship letter from employer (Scheme II), NRI/NRI sponsored relevant documents (Scheme III).

The duty completed application forms must reach the Admission Coordinator, Department of Economics, University of Allahabad, Allahabad, by July 25, 2008 Postal delays will not be condoned in any case. Incomplete admission forms are liable to be summarily rejected.

Online counseling shall start from 3rd July, 2008

Hitherto, the admissions into the Polytechnics were being organised by the Board through a manual process which involved the visit of parents and the students to the Board's office and wait for unending hours in the sweltering heat. In the interest of transparency and convenience of the public, the Board has endeavoured to monitor the admission through online this year onwards. Students can select their courses / institutes in order of their preference through internet which can be accessed from their homes, cyber cafes or any nearby Polytechnic college. The detailed procedure and the schedule of online counseling is as under :–

1. Only those candidates who have appeared in JET 2008 are eligible for online counseling for admission to 1st year diploma courses. This condition is not applicable for LEET and Pharmacy admissions.

2. To participate in online counseling, it is mandatory for every candidate to register himself / herself on the counseling website i.e. http://www.psbte.gov.in or http://psbte.gov.in

3. Before registration, every candidate irrespective of category, will have to deposit a counseling fee of Rs. 500/- (in cash only) in any computerized banking solution branch (CBS) of Punjab National Bank as given in JET-2008/LEET/Pharmacy Prospectus. The Bank challan form which is available in the prospectus may be photocopied for the sake of re - registration or re-counseling. Alternatively the challan form may also be got printed from the Board’s websites while applying for recounseling/ re-registration.

4. Candidate can register themselves from the premises of the help centers as given on website (without payment of additional charges) or from any internet point of their choice.

5.
Having paid the counseling fee the candidate shall log on to http://www.psbte.gov.in or http://psbte.gov.in where registration form shall be displayed on the screen. The following parameters or mandatory for successful registration i.e. Roll No., OMR Application No., Candidate Name and Date of Birth.

6. After successful registration, the candidate shall get a confirmation message on the same page. In case the confirmation message is not displayed, the candidate has to register again.

7. Candidate shall be required to fill in basic detail including category, which would be used for choice filling and seat allotment. The user ID will be the candidate’s Roll No. and the password shall be as provided by the candidate at the time of registration. However in case of LEET the application No./Prospectus No. shall be the user ID. The same shall be made use of at the time of filling up choices.

8. Candidates are advised in their own interest to remember the Password and keep it confidential, in order to avoid misuse, for which PSBTE/NIC shall not be responsible.

In case Candidate forget his/ her password then “Forgot Password” option on the web page will help to re-generate the forgotten Password.

10. After successful login, candidate’s homepage will be opened and following options would be displayed:

• Registration details: Registration Detail is important for seat allotment and should be filled very carefully.

• Edit Registration: The candidate can edit the entered information already entered by “Edit Registration” option.

• Available Choices:
Provides the list of available Colleges and trades as per the eligibility of candidate.

• Fill Choices: Can fill the College and Trade of his/her choice provided in the list in the order of preference.

• Display filled Choices: Choices entered by the Candidate will be displayed on different form so that he/she can check the already entered information.

• Allotment of seat: After the choice filling period is over as outlined in schedule, all filled choices of all registered candidates will be considered for allotment of seats as per merit (Rank) and category of the candidates.

11. On the date of result declaration, the candidate can take a printout of provisional allotment letter of College/trade from the website http://www.psbte.gov.in or http://psbte.gov.in and proceed for payment of semester fee. The allotment of seats is purely provisional and subject to verification of original certificates, payment of counseling fee and semester fee etc. at the time of reporting in the allotted institute.

12. Candidates are required to report to their respective allotted institution with in the specified period (as per the counseling schedule) along with the documents / testimonials / certificates / proof of deposition of counseling fee and semester fee as mentioned in the prospectus. Failure to do so shall result in automatic cancellation of allotment and the candidate shall have no claim on the seat what so ever.

2ND AND 3RD COUNSELING ELIGIBILITY

13. The Candidates, irrespective of whether they have been allotted a seat or not /or could not join the allotted institution or could not participate in the earlier counseling, permitted to participate in the earlier counseling are permitted to participate in the 2nd and 3rd counseling against the available seats by depositing Rs. 500/- as counseling charges in CBS branches of Punjab National Bank. However, this fee shall be adjusted in case the allocation of seats does not change from the previous allotment.

14. The detailed instruction about the online counseling shall be available on the website http://www.psbte.gov.in or http://psbte.gov.in The Candidate is requested to go through the details at these sites before registration.

The counseling fee of Rs. 500/- + Bank charges, has to be deposited before registration. For the first counseling it should be deposited on or before 3rd July, 2008 for the 2nd counseling on or before 23rd July, 2008 and for the 3rd counseling on or before 8th August 2008.

The course having 22 seats along with 2 seats earmarked for candidates sponsored by the government/institution has been introduced on the direction of University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The department of Geography has been given the responsibility to run this course.

The hallmarks of the course designed include an adequate focus on professional ingredients including two months compulsory internship in the third semester and use of latest remote sensing and GIS technology in mitigation and management of disasters and vulnerability analysis. Admission 2008 of NRIs To Under Graduate and Master's Programmes of GADVASU

ADMISSION OF NRIs, THEIR CHILDREN/WARDS TO UNDERGRADUATE AND MASTERS’ PROGRAMMES

Applications on the prescribed forms are invited from the NRIs, their children/wards for admission to Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes for the academic session 2008-09. Candidates seeking admission to B.V.Sc.& A.H./B,Tech. (Dairy Technology)/Master’s programme need to fulfill the criteria for admission to the above said programmes.

The NRI candidates educated and residing abroad seeking admission to B.V.Sc.& A.H. and B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) programmes will be considered for admission without appearing in the entrance test of the University provided they have passed 12th standard level examination with 50% marks in aggregate in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English for B.V.Sc.& A.H. and Mathematics (in lieu of Biology) for B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) programme, subject to verification of its equivalence with the 10+2 examination (Medical/Non-Medical Group) of the Punjab School Education Board by an appropriate authority as per rules mentioned in the Prospectus. The NRI candidates educated and residing abroad seeking admission to Master’s programme will be considered for admission, provided they fulfil other prescribed qualifications. Prospectus and application form can be obtained from the Dean, College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana-141004, either by sending crossed Bank Draft for Rs.2200/- drawn in favour of Comptroller, GADVASU, Ludhiana and payable at any scheduled Bank at Ludhiana or personally from the office of Dean, College of Veterinary Science GADVASU on payment of Rs.2000/- in cash at the counter on all working days from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Prospectus and application forms will be sent under postal certificate. The University will not be responsible for postal delay or loss in transit.

Last date for receipt of completed application forms for B.V.Sc.& A.H./B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) and Master’s programmes is 4.7.2008 and 22.7.2008, respectively. Incomplete application/applications received after the prescribed date shall not be entertained. No separate intimation will be sent for interview.

GADVASU conducts Common Entrance Test

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana conducted Common Entrance Test (CET) – GADVASU-2008 on 24th June 2008. CET-GADVASU was held at R.S.Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Near Model Town, Ludhiana.

Dr VK Taneja, Vice –Chancellor, GADVASU, visited the various examination centres of CET-GADVASU for assessing the comfort and convenience of the appearing candidates.

Dr.S.P.S. Sangha , Controller of Examinations, GADVASU, told that a total number of 939 students appeared in the test for B.V.Sc. & AH, B.F.Sc. & B.Tech (Dairy Tech.) programmes. Among the candidates 60% (569) were boys while 40% (370) were girls. Further, Dr. Sangha told that there was a great enthusiasm in the students for the entrance test, as they feel that after doing graduation in Veterinary Science from GADVASU they have excellent scope for placement in the field in our country as well as abroad and no candidate is unemployed at present.

Dr.S.S.Sidhu, Co-ordinator conduct, CET-GADVASU-2008 told that the entrance test was held in a very nice and smooth way and the students were happy with the physical arrangements in the centres.

Dr.S.K.Jand, Registrar, GADVASU said that the counseling for B.V.Sc. & A.H. and B.F.Sc.will be held on 30th June, while for B.Tech(Dairy Technology) on 1st July. Students were very glad, as two new courses B.F.Sc. & B.Tech (Dairy Tech.) have been started by the University from this academic session and they feel that their future is quite safe. Further, students feel that they have got ample choice to study at GADVASU as many were aspiring to study at Veterinary University.
